The Hurricanes Provide E-Readers to DNS

April 3, 2010

nook 2When your school needs a full-size, well-stocked middle school library, and you don’t have the space or funding to purchase books and materials, what do you do? You get creative. Richard Burton, DNS Development Director, did just that when he looked into using e-readers and e-books.

Thankfully the school has a great working relationship with the Carolina Hurricanes’ Kids ‘N Community Foundation. In past years they have generously helped our students and have hosted them at a number of Hurricanes home games. Upon learning of the DNS e-reader needs, the foundation’s executive director Dick Warf encouraged DNS to apply for a grant through their “Pick up a Book and Read” program.

DNS received a grant from the foundation and was able to purchase 50 Nooks and a great starting assortment of e-books from Barnes & Noble. Additionally, DNS is able to take advantage of a program with the Durham County Library in which our students can ‘borrow’ e-books at no charge. Through the generosity of the Carolina Hurricanes, their Kids ‘N Community Foundation, and our local public library, Durham Nativity School students are able to fully utilize their new Nooks!

Please join us in thanking the Carolina Hurricanes and their Kids N’ Community Foundation!
